Experience of Working with Adults and Couples

I have had experience of working with adults and couples since 1991 who have had a wide variety of problems from mild to moderate mental health and behavioural issues in a variety of settings such as: Pastoral, the NHS, Probation, the legal Systems, Social Services, Women's Aid, Stepping Stones, the Waterhouse Inquiry, and fifteen EAP's agencies such as; Axa Icas, Bupa, Medra, Care First.

Most have been short term focused therapy but a quarter have been long term. I enjoy working with adults who have struggled with anxiety and depression and some how found the energy to address their issues, develop new skills resulting in a new lease and quality of life or a father who has not seen his children because of anger and after working on developing healthier skills now is deemed safe to have access to see his children.

Experience of Working with Young People

I have had experience of working with young people in a wide variety of settings such as, Barnardoes, Community First, NHS, and as a clinical manager with a homeless charity. In that role as clinical manager I was the child protection co-ordinator and responsible for the welfare and care of young mothers and their children. When necessary I had to write reports for case conferences and the family court.

Some of the problems the young people experienced were; self harm, being in care, living in a family where there was domestic abuse, victims of child sexual abuse, parents being an alcoholic and or drug addict, challenging personality styles, bereavement, depression, anxiety and huge levels of loss in their lives, bullying and anger. I loved working with the young people and did my MA dissertation on 'Mental Health Issues of Homeless Young People'.

My Area of Special Interest

In 1996 I gained a scholarship to attend 'Training in Trauma Treatment' organised by the Psychiatric Institute of Washington D.C. and attended the training two years in succession. There I learnt about the trauma model of caring for individuals who wished to consider therapy and the impact on the therapist working with traumatic material.

I also learnt the importance of educating the person about the natural impact to trauma and the four post abuse issues that are present at some level or other until they are addressed.

From this experience I wrote a 10 week skills training programme for working with adult survivors of child sexual abuse and ran it for many years within the NHS setting and other agencies. Now I offer training workshops within the UK and Eire on the various topics surrounding sexual trauma, shame and vicarious trauma.

I have worked with clients of sexual trauma in a variety of settings for 20 years and provided monthly supervision for those working in the field. It gives me tremendous satisfaction to see someone who has been traumatised in childhood take control of their recovery journey and begin to live and fulfil their life dreams such as going to university, finding a job of their dreams or enjoying a relationship.
